Summer registration opens March 18

UNC-Chapel Hill and visiting students can begin registering for summer courses effective March 18.

Almost 600 sections of courses will offer students options to meet General Education requirements, satisfy major and minor requirements, complete science courses and requisite labs, or take a course they might have been closed out of during the academic year.

Departments within the College of Arts & Sciences as well as six professional schools in Academic Affairs list courses for undergraduate and graduate students.

“So much is available in summer to help students catch up on and even get ahead on academic requirements,” said Dean Jan Yopp. “Experential education courses allow students to focus on work in the community or travel—sometimes offering experiences not available during the academic year.”

Incoming first-year or transfer students can get a head start and become acclimated to campus by attending at least one summer session, usually second session, Yopp noted. Some students will participate in cohort programs, while others take classes on their own.

This summer more than two-thirds of courses identified as high-capacity or bottleneck courses during the academic year are being offered. Though Maymester students can earn three credit hours, then have the remainder of the summer for study abroad, work, internships or other activities. Online courses deliver content wherever a student might be. A new Hip-Hop Institute will complement other Music Department programs in jazz and violin, and the Asian Studies Department will offer Korean as a language series in first and second session.

“I highly recommend that students check out the breadth of course offerings as well as the depth within in departments,” Yopp said. “I know there is a course or two that will pique their interest. And financially, Summer School is a cost-effective way to stay on track to graduate on time.”

Any student who has questions should email the Summer School at summer_school@unc.edu or call the office at 919.966.4364.
