Chemistry

Rameses participates in Chemistry research as part of University Research Week.

Are you interested in understanding the world around you on a molecular level?

Do you want to learn about the atoms that make up everything from the air we breathe to the foods we eat? If so, chemistry might be the major for you! This immersive program offers participants a first-hand look at college-level chemistry through engaging lectures from senior UNC graduate students, interactive laboratory tours showcasing cutting-edge research, and hands-on demonstrations that bring chemical concepts to life. Students will connect with current chemistry majors, graduate students, and professors through panel discussions, and conduct their own laboratory experiments. Participants will leave with insight into academic pathways, research opportunities, and career possibilities that accompany an undergraduate degree in chemistry.

Instructor: Lexie Handlin

Lexie Handlin is a 3rd year Ph.D. student co-advised by Dr. Erik Alexanian and Dr. Frank Leibfarth. Her research focuses primarily on computational and experimental C-H functionalization methodologies for applications in small molecule and polyolefin upcycling. She has assisted with introductory and upper-level chemistry courses at UNC and has taught general chemistry independently at several correctional facilities in the Chapel Hill area. Outside of campus you can find her coaching at CrossFit Local or hanging out with her cat, Mark.

Instructor: Michael Rodriguez

Michael Rodriguez is a fourth-year PhD student in the laboratory of Professor Erik Alexanian, where he conducts research focused on cobalt-catalyzed transformations of simple molecular building blocks. He has served as a guest lecturer for Organic Chemistry I and II courses, as well as a teaching assistant for General Chemistry I. As the outreach coordinator for the Alexanian lab, Michael organizes and facilitates scientific outreach events with the community. Outside of the lab, he can be found reading a book or baking bread!
