Art History

Explore students analyze ancient art at the Ackland Museum.

Every artwork has a story to tell.

Art History offers a vibrant lens for understanding how and why humans across centuries have expressed their beliefs, identities, and imaginations. Majors and minors in art history sharpen their critical thinking and visual literacy by becoming acquainted with the historical significance, cultural diversity, and intellectual richness of human artistic traditions, enabling students to investigate the complex roles played by the arts in a variety of social contexts. During this track, students will uncover how art reflects cultural movements and historical change (to see the big picture, pun intended). They will study artworks using college-level techniques and materials and interpret visual stories with the guidance of experts. You’ll also hear directly from faculty and current students who will share what it’s like to pursue Art History, from coursework to research. As you learn how this major connects to fields like museum curation, conservation, education, design, and more, you’ll discover just how many career paths can be pursued through a degree in Art History.
