What's New in Summer 2009

  • Summer School is continually striving to offer innovative academic initiatives along with the traditional courses that students expect to find in summer. Maymester is an example of new ventures in summer; 2009 is the third year for Maymester, and this year course listings include what General Education requirements each course satisfies.

  • Summer Study USA

  • The Music Department will offer MUSC 471, an international violin symposium with an intensive nine-day focus on various aspects of violin technique and interpretation. Students selected will receive lessons and master classes from three faculty violinists. The course will meet May 13-22 with May 20 and 21 as public performance dates. See Music under Course Offerings for more information.
  • In conjunction with the Bolshoi Ballet’s appearance in June 2009, Slavic Languages will offer a Russian culture course, specifically RUSS 270, Russian Literature of the 19th Century. Students will attend a Bolshoi performance as part of the course.
  • Students can also learn about Russia's resurgence as a global superpower during and after the current world economic crisis. ECON 468, "Russian Economy from Lenin to Medvedev," will put into context the principles, design and organization of state-controlled economies.

  • An expanded course listing in Biology is being offered in both summer sessions, including core classes (101, 210, 202, 205). In addition students can find two >400 level courses - BIOL 445, "Cancer Biology" (new to Summer School this year) and BIOL 272, "Local Flora" (new this year); BIOL 278, :Animal Behavior"; and BIOL 276, "Evolution to Vertebrate Life." BIOL 252, "Fundamentals of Human Anatomy and Physiology," is available both sessions.
