Course Load & Credits Earned
Course Load. The maximum credit hour load allowed cannot exceed more than 8 credit hours in Maymester/First Session or more than 8 credit hours in Second Session. Students will be required to drop to 8 credit hours if the limit is exceeded.
Full-time Enrollment. The University defines full-time enrollment for the summer as 4 hours for undergraduate students and 3 hours for graduate students in one of the summer terms.
Financial Aid Course Load. Course loads for financial aid purposes differ from the information above. UNC-Chapel Hill students seeking financial aid in the summer should visit the “Financial Aid” page for more information. Visiting students are not eligible for financial aid from UNC-Chapel Hill and should contact their home institution.
Credits Earned. Course credit earned in Maymester, each summer session, and online is equivalent to the same course credit in the fall or spring term. However, summer courses are compressed into 5 1/2 weeks with classes meeting Monday through Friday for 90-minute periods unless otherwise specified. Online courses are also compressed into 5 1/2 weeks and follow the dates of their respective session. Maymester courses are compressed into 3 weeks with classes meeting Monday through Friday for 3 hours and 15 minutes each day.
