Bus Transportation - 2009

Students are encouraged to use the fare-free Chapel Hill Transit bus system, serving riders at UNC and in both Chapel Hill and Carrboro. YES, buses are FREE. Schedules may be obtained on any bus or at the Department of Public Safety (DPS) in the Public Safety Building on south campus.  All schedules and route maps are on the web at townofchapelhill.org/transit.  Commuting students living more than two miles from UNC's Bell Tower may qualify for a free regional transit pass.  Visit dps.unc.edu or call DPS at (919)962-3951 for more information.

Parking Permits - 2009

Parking on campus is restricted and permits are required for a Summer School student to park an automobile during regulation hours. A valid vehicle registration and proof of liability insurance (insurer, policy number, and expiration date of current policy) are required to purchase a parking permit. The two-mile radius permit restrictions are not in effect during the summer.

Parking permit registration begins online on Wednesday, March 19, on the Department of Public Safety website (dps.unc.edu). Permits are reserved on a first come, first serve basis through Thursday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m.  The sale of pre-registered permits begins on Monday, May 12, to those attending first session, or on Wednesday, June 18, for second session (all dates are tentative and subject to change; please visit the Public Safety website to confirm details.  Come to the Parking Services office in the Public Safety Building (located on Hardin Drive off of Manning Drive). Students seeking permits on these sale days may park in the Rams Head Deck for $1.25 (hourly rate).

Parking permit holders may park only in the specific zones indicated on their parking permit. After 5:00 p.m. on weekdays students may park in any unreserved spaces except those in resident student lots. Vehicles parked illegally may be cited. Subsequent violations may result in further citations, immobilization (i.e. booting), or towing.

Alternatives to Parking. The Department of Public Safety sponsors alternatives to parking on campus, such as the Commuter Alternative Program (CAP).  Those who join the CAP program can access five additional park and ride lots and are eligible for discounts at local businesses and for random prize drawings.  The Point-to-Point Campus Shuttle (962-P-To-P or 962-7867, or 962-7142 [TDD] for the hearing impaired) serves disabled students and students going to the Student Health Center at all times. After dark, the P2P Shuttle serves all students not on the Express route.  For further information on alternative methods of commuting to and from UNC as well as car-free access throughout the Triangle Region, visit http://www.redefinetravel.org.
