The Instrument of Student Judicial Governance
Your acceptance of enrollment in the University presupposes a commitment to The Instrument of Student Judicial Governance, including its Honor Code. The most up-to-date version of the Instrument is on-line (instrument.unc.edu). Sections in quotations below are excerpted from the Instrument.
Honor Code
"It is the responsibility of every student at the University to obey and support the enforcement of the Honor Code [and] refrain from lying, cheating, or stealing when these actions involve academic processes or University, student, or academic personnel acting in an official capacity. " It is the further responsibility of every student to conduct him/herself "so as not to impair significantly the welfare or the educational opportunities of others in the University community, and refrain from conduct that impairs or may impair the capacity of University and associated personnel to perform their duties, manage resources, protect the safety and welfare of members of the University community, and maintain the integrity of the University." (Instrument, Section II.A)
Procedure for Reporting Honor Code Violations
It is the responsibility of students, faculty, and other instructional personnel to report to the Student Attorney General (966-4084) or to the Dean of Students (966-4042), or to other appropriate officers or officials of their college or school "any instance in which reasonable grounds exist to believe a student has given or received unauthorized aid in graded work or in other respects violated the Honor Code". (Instrument, Appendices A and B)
Sanctions
The Student Court may impose the following sanctions alone or in combination against individuals: academic sanctions (e.g., a failing grade), conduct sanctions, loss of University privileges, penalties of record (including definite, indefinite, or permanent suspension, or expulsion), and an official written reprimand. It may also impose group sanctions where appropriate. (Instrument, Section III)
Academic Dishonesty
"It shall be the responsibility of every student enrolled at the University to support the principles of academic integrity and to refrain from all forms of academic dishonesty, including, but not limited to, the following: plagiarism in the form of deliberate or reckless representation of another's words, thoughts, or ideas as one's own without attribution in connection with submission of academic work, whether graded or otherwise; falsification, fabrication, or misrepresentation of data...; unauthorized assistance or unauthorized collaboration...; cheating on examinations or other academic assignments...; deliberately furnishing false information...; forging, falsifying, or misusing University documents...; violating other University policies...; and assisting or aiding another to engage in acts of academic dishonesty." (Instrument, Section II.B)
