Course Load / Credit

Course Load. If you are an undergraduate enrolled in four or more semester hours or a graduate student enrolled in three or more hours in a regular 5 1/2 week session, you are classified as a full-time student. A typical registration for undergraduates is two courses for six credit hours; the maximum is eight hours to allow enrollment in courses earning four credit hours or an extra one-hour laboratory or physical activity course. If you are taking a concentrated short course, it may preclude your taking any other course in the same session.

Credit. Course credit earned is equivalent to the same course credit in the fall or spring term. However, summer courses are compressed into 5 1/2 weeks with day classes meeting Monday through Friday for 90-minute periods unless otherwise specified. Late afternoon and night classes are available.

Computer Requirements

Incoming Students. As of Fall Semester 2000, all undergraduate students at UNC-Chapel Hill are required to own a laptop that meets or exceeds the minimum specifications for their class.  All incoming undergraduate and graduate students at UNC-Chapel Hill are encouraged to participate in the Carolina Computing Initiative by purchasing a CCI laptop model.  See www.unc.edu/cci.

Current Students. All currently enrolled graduate and undergraduate students at UNC-Chapel Hill are eligible to purchase a CCI computer as well as accessories and upgrades for their current computers.

While degree seeking students at UNC-Chapel HIll are required to have a laptop computer, summer visiting students should check with individual instructors to confirm the necessity of a laptop in class for the summer course(s) of your choice.  In some cases, extensive use of a computer is required in class and you must bring a laptop to the class.  In many courses, the use of a computer is an aid to the course work.  Computer labs are available on campus for computer access outside of class.
